A home business owner finds a free WhatsApp AI bot online. It auto-replies “Hi, thanks for your message” and forwards chats to her phone. She thinks she has automation. Then a customer asks, “Can I get the bundle with free shipping?” The bot replies with a generic thank-you note. The customer never follows up.

Free tools are not free. They hide the cost in lost sales.

What free WhatsApp AI agents actually do

Most free tiers handle keyword greetings, office hours, basic FAQ matching, and forwarding. They do not handle product catalog lookups, in-chat checkout, payment confirmation, order tracking, abandoned cart recovery, or repeat-order scheduling.

For a D2C brand, the second list drives revenue. The first is table stakes.

The cost equation

Assume a free bot loses one sale per day due to weak responses. At an average order value of IDR 150,000, that is IDR 4.5 million per month in lost revenue. A paid commerce agent costing IDR 1.5 million per month that saves those sales returns roughly 3x.

When a free tool is enough

A free bot is fine only if you have no paid ads, one product with no variants, and no follow-up questions. That is not most D2C businesses.

The honest question

You are running Meta ads and paying for every click. Why would you let a free tool be the last thing a hot buyer interacts with before deciding to buy?
